Epilogue

[Scene]

Stands atop a grassy hill, overlooking the horizon of a wide and open grassland. The gentle wind blows over the grass, swaying them back and forth. The sun sinking into the ground, its rest is well deserved.

[End Scene]

With a tri-pointed hat atop my head, and a long cloak on my back that danced with the winds, I think back to the journey I had just finished. The difficult times and the easy times. The good and the bad.

"It was all worth it..." I said into the wind as it carried my words across the distant land.

As I watch the sun set, I can't help but wonder what lies beyong the horizon. What future I may have. Will it be promising? Will it be heart-breaking? None may never know... except the sands of time.

Hour of the Eternal Judgement

Well, in the past two days it was a massive crunch time. Cody, Jesse, Chi and I worked our asses off on the game itself and putting it together. I spent the entire last two days working on 3 quests and making sure they operate successfully.

It was tiring, but I enjoyed it and the result was quite satisfying, even after all the scrapped ideas and such L M A O!!!

Jason gave us our final meeting with only like... 3/4 of the class. The rest was probably too busy with Danny (Which I sort of doubt) or didn't know we had to come in on Wednesday -_-"

One of the comments that was given during the student's turn was about my perfectionism... which is true. I can't help it, I got it from my mother XD

Least I didn't go "nah! Bull****!" lmao.

But today, we mostly tested the game, searching for bugs and such. There were a few, but Cody and I managed to fix them, which was all sweet!

Jason liked it I think and reminded us that all this time, it wasn't creating a game that was #1, but learning to work in a team. Which is all true. I hope we do another game next week, I think we could do a LOT better.

But man, it's good to have the game finished ^^ some of us celebrated by playing some Warcraft III XD Booya! Hoowah! Sweet! Oh~yeah!!!!!!

Well, I think this is the last blog I will make for this game, so in saying that, have fun all you gamers, don't work too hard and for the love of all that is sweet and holy, don't start working hard near the last minute when you're making a game with a bunch of first timers.

Goodbye everybody!

In the Presence of 3 Judges

Well today is when Beta was expected and that's what we practically gave the three 1st years. The first 3 hours we spent on the game. I helped Jesse with the interface and placing them in the game and also helped Cody with the quests and its coding. I also got Jason to draw Eva's clothing in item form and after the Beta test was over, I helped out with coding the quests.

It was my first time but I managed to get the very first part of the sewers quest done. The hard thing is that the sewers map didn't match the quest outline 100%. For example, it says that on the right door, of the two in the room, there is a ruty valve that is tight shut or something a rather. But on the map, there is no valve whatsoever!

It was hard for me because the quest was written as though it was a story. I mean there is nothing wrong with that, but in terms of quests and guides, I tend to understand it more without the irrelevant information like how the water glistened, how there are soft sounds and light coming from above and the sort.

That's why when I wrote quests, I done them like a Video Game Walkthrough. i.e In this room, go to the right and open door; or in this room, there is a pipe on the wall. Talk to it and you will recieve an item... and so forth.

Luckily someone else, I think Chi, already done some parts of the sewers quest, which was good. But I rechecked to see if they were right. I also redone the walkable and walkbehinds so that Alex won't disappear behind the doors when he is actually in front.

I will work on it more in future times, but that was practically most of the day.

But I think we might actually get a complete game in the end. I can't wait though until all this is over. Everyone done a great job, some more than others, but at least everyone contributed to the game in one way or another. If I remember, Chi stayed until 3am and James, who was at home, stayed up until 3am as well working on sprites. That's dedication! ^^

The Darkness before the Light

Well today was the last day before Beta is expected.

I think most of the gaming people came today and as usualy began working on the game. Cody did dialogue, Chi did rooms, Jesse did coding and the rest did rooms. As for me, I got a bit sidetracked by helping a fellow student with his AR project. But at the same time I helped Chi sot out some things in terms of rooms, items and quests.

At the end, after leaving uni in my mum's car, I decided to stay longer to help, so I did... ending up staying until 10:30 pm o.O

I helped Jesse in terms of the inventory but mostly helped Chi because he was setting up the rooms. So I went along with him, listing down the events and what exactly happens in each of the rooms. Also resized some items to fit the rooms ^^

Problem is, I couldn't finish it all because some rooms weren't done yet. Other than the Sect HQ's Toilet (Which was done by the end of the day), I was missing the Sect's kitchen, Janitor's closet and a few rooms in the Temple of Technology. So a couple of the items I couldn't resize. But those I could, I did. But almost all the items are obtained by looking at something or talking to someone. So that saved tiem ^^

I'm pretty tired today so I was glad when my feet touched my house's carpet XD

Hopefully tomorrow goes well and hopefully we get a Beta. I'm also waiting a FINAL confirmation about the inventory. I had to resize and redo the items so many items that thinking about it makes me dizzy.

I just hope all goes well tomorrow ^^

Also with that, At the end of the night, Cody said that James was busy working with the sprites at home, which is sweet! We also got the character's portraits done which was good ^^

Seeing the Falling Sun

Well, today was the second part of the meeting...

I rechecked the Asylum, Sect HQ, Sewers and Art Gallery quest for any items and I think I got them all.

I made them, gave them a bold outline (For the cell-shade effect) and resized them. Hopefully the resizing works. After that I started to learn the very basics of AGS, at least in terms of putting items in the room and such.

I forgot to ask the modellers to create a man who sits on one of the chairs in the pub and then, after putting down ants in his back, sits up and runs away.

When I asked if they could do it, they got a little pissed. Telling me that I expected them to create another model with animation 2 days before Beta deadline. So I apologize for that, that was rather rude since they were busting their assess on other models and the such.

So I ended up altering the Pub quest because unfortunately, the quest starts with the man who sits on a chair and is blocking a hole on the ground. So, half the quest is gone and I made it so that the hole is located near a barrel next to the back door.

Also, in terms of models, I also had to scrap the 'cat holding the fish in its mouth with the hook' part of the quest. I made it so that when you go outside, there will be a fish on top of the trash cans.

Hmm... so many things got scrapped and altered in this game due to the deadline that it seems our final result may not be good =(

But I must be positive! The show must go on!

So, I'm gonna come back tomorrow and hopefully I can help with the coding, or at least putting the items in the rooms.

Which reminds me... I need to draw the fish on top of the trash cans XD

Meeting again! 3 days before Wednesday, when Beta is due...

*que thunder and lightning*

But I think we got a lot done. We worked on rooms, character sprites and models and most of the time we tried sorting out rooms.

A lot of things got modified, changed, scrapped etc. So we were all confused, least I was.

I spend 90% of the day working on items and their description and resizing them for the game and adding alpha channels.

Cody done dialogue and made some background animation which were awesome hehehehe.

Bad thing is, I think half of the class came, so it was rather bad since we needed more help.

I think we might be able to JUST finish the Beta by Wednesday, but I'm still not sure =(

Let's hope for the best.

It would really suck though if we failed, I really enjoyed this class when I look back. I mean yeah there were stressing moment,s but working on a game is really fun.

I really think that if we were more organized, we would have got Beta weeks ago.

Like today, I just realised that the artists randomly drew streets and places without even knowing what the town looked like. So we had to try connecting them. If they were told exactly what type of street to draw, where it began, where it ended and the camera angle, it would be WAY easier and faster.

*sigh*

Honestly, I really want to have another gaming class next year. I'm sure that next time we would know what to do. Oh well...

There is still tomorrow's meeting XD

The Good, the Bad and the Just Real Plain

Well today in game class, Joseph and I sorted out some of the story in the design documents and sorted out what each of the pieces are. So far we have a Motherboard, Monitor, Nuclear Batter, Fibre Optics Cable and the last piece, which is with Edward/Man in Black.

I got some items from Joseph and started working on them. It wasn't much, which was good hehehehehe. Near the end or half of the class, I remembered that I had to redo the items with alpha channels AND resize them according to the Inventory window. Which I will hopefully finish during this Sunday's meeting.

Jesse apparantly got the dialogue window working, which made me relieved. Modellers started creating NPCs I think and I told them that there is still a cat to do and 5 other children XD

Which shouldn't be hard, just get Leiah and change her a bit lmao.

More rooms were done and Carter finished the Motherboard image, which is very good since I needed that image to be stuck onto the Gallery Tickets.

I think this is going pretty well, but we need a Beta finished by next Wednesday. Which is making me worry considering we haven't done ANY of the quests o.O o.O o.O

I just hope we get a lot done on Sunday and Monday. I also hope Asif comes during the meeting and hope Jared's doing alright =(

I prayed for him when I first heard the news a couple of weeks ago so I hope he recovers soon and is back on his feet =D

How the Mighty have Fallen

Well today I went to the meeting planned by Jesse. Though when I came, he wasn't there -_-

I met with others who managed to get into the building through an unlocked 2nd floor door. At the end, we were able to get into 5th floor and to our room thanks to a security guard who spotted us outside the 5th floor door from the ground below.

We started working as more people came, except for Jesse. Most of the people were angry at the fact that he was the leader yet he wasn't there. What was his excuse? He thought it was 10 am XD lmao. It's funny because the email he sent us said 9pm, which he then corrected to 9am.

Anywhos, everyone just got into the job as usual. Modellers model, writers write and artists... art?

I forgot to tell Carter to draw the "Pieces" for the game. At least to my understanding, he was suppose to draw it. If memory serves right, when he drew the "Parallel Dimension Machine", Jesse or someone said that he could do the pieces. This affected not only me, but James as well. He was also annoyed at the fact that he was working on the animation of Nancy falling over and when he wanted to know how she fell, the writers present said that she doesn't. She just lost the pocketwatch already when you meet her.

I wish I could confirm him, but Jarred took over the sewers quest, so it's out of my hands. Plus, I didn't know he changed that part of the quest, I thought he only changed the actual "sewers" quest. Well, I assume he changed Nancy's scene or else where did James get the idea?

Yeah, I think the group could be MUCH MORE organized in terms of information. We always run into questions and stuff. Or is that because we never check the Design Document?

I began working on the interface, making the TGA files and alpha channels. I managed to resign and finish off the cursors for the game.

It all went well until... we tried testing different things on the AGS. Which was annoying because I thought that the AGS people already learnt the basics of the programme... like creating a room and importing TGA files like my interface. Asif had to go near 11 because he has a job, which is understandable.

I ended up re-creating files multiple times because 1. AGS kept surprising us and 2. I asked Jesse to test the interface to see if my files worked in terms of transparancy and the such but he was too busy working with other things on AGS so my reply took long.

AGS was giving us so many problems it made me stressed and really annoyed. At the end, I just told Jesse that I am not continuing the interface until AGS is sussed out. Because I don't want to always remake files.

I had to remake files due to alpha channels (Because it took LONG to test it), I had to remake files because Jesse wanted to add some ornates to all the window's corners (Which I guess is understandable), I had to remake some because APPARANTLY, buttons have to made in seperate files. Seriously, I was so angry and stressed after today... and when a gamer like me gets stressed over a gaming class, you know there is somethin wrong XD

We also had problems with positioning things on AGS because we can't just drag images and place them ourselves. We needed to put in the numbers under the X and Y axis. But there is no preview, so we had to keep going in and out of the game to position the image. Also, the game can't take decimals!

We also had trouble with the cursor. If the pointer cursor (A picture of a hand pointing) was the entire image, when clicked, the character would go to the place where the "middle of the hand" clicked, because that was the middle of the image. We had an idea of making the "space" big and the "pointer" small so that the finger points to the middle of the space.

It worked, but the character was off to the left by a bit. I told Jesse that it's because the character is on the left half of the square image of the walk cycle images, but he said that it doesn't matter because there is another square that is around the character. But if memory serves right, when Jason (tutor) showed us an example of AGS, the walk cycle images had the character in the "middle" of the square. I decided to just go with what Jesse said because I didn't want to risk getting into an arguement and prolonging the issue.

We had other problems, but I think I'm done talking about AGS -_-

...

...

Hmm what else is there to talk about. Oh yeah, I'm waiting for Jesse to tell me what is needed inside the "Options" menu. Hopefully he remembers, I'll email him I guess.

Well, that's all folks!

The Hands of Fate

In today's gaming class, we got some more rooms done by Carter and Jason is working on the pub. He was working on the logoes before and both (The game and the company) looks terrific. Some people weren't there like Eugene and Jared but I showed my interface designs to most of the leaders and others who wanted to watch. Seems everyone liked it and I'm glad XD.

I just need to know what will be in the "Options" menu. Jason (The tutor) taught me and Jesse about paths in Photoshop and how to make the interface I done be worthy for AGS. Man, I think Jason likes crushing people's hopes and dreams XD. Why you ask? Well last time he was like "Final Fantasy 7 is shit", or something along those lines. Today, he was like "You'll never get a job if you can't use Photoshop". Yeah it's true, I admit it, I mean I'm not "that" stupid XD. But still =( lol.

Ah well, least today I learnt about paths in Photoshop so that's something. Hopefully I become really good in Photoshop heheheh.

So that's what I done most of the class period, learning paths and making TGA files for AGS. Hopefully they all work.

Now, today we have some horrific news. We need an Alpha by next week with all the rooms done. Luckily the rooms don't have to be 100% finished. Even sketches will be fine. But man, that's a LOT of pressure to put on the team... oh did I mention that if we don't he is going to fail our 1st year asses? Yeah, that's good ol' Jason, keepin' it real XD

Hmm what else happened... well mostly everyone just got stuck to their work. Modelling, dialogues, drawing etc.

Well let's hope next week we DO have an Alpha, I would be so disappointed if we fail =(

BTW... *looks at Jason* the only reason I'm taking Digital Design is to bring my written work to life ^^ =P. It gets boring if they only exist through words on paper. Well, let's hope Jason's warning will jumpstart me to start learning Photoshop in the holidays and remembering them hehehhehe.

The Three Scriptures

Today Jason gave us a "mark" on our Design Document, Story and Logics. He gave the Design Document and Story a 8/10 and the Logics a 7/10 (if memory serves right).

Well here is "my report" about each of these:

Design Document:

I haven't read the entire thing before until Jessey asked me to help him write the Appendix XYZ at the back. So obviously I did since he is the Project Leader. I didn't mind because I love organising things (yeah I can be a neat freak sometimes). Only thing I did was just add like 4-5 words/phrases into the Appendix that some readers may not understand. I didn't have to spellcheck though since it was on Microsoft Word XD. I guess that was my contribution to the Design Document =P.

Anyway, when I read through it, it sounded good. I can't say it was up to professional standards though since I never actually read a Design Document before. But maybe some more details in terms of explanation could be added. But in the end, I didn't find anything that made me say "yo! I think you need to add this" or the such. Unless I missed something XD. I'm hoping that Jason finishes the logo for our "company" so that we can stick it on the front of the Design Document. Because right now it looks dull ><.

Oh wait, I just remembered something. I think Jesse needs to move the "Save/Load" description and not place it under Interface Design. Because instead of clicking on that in the menus and the such, we made it that you save by clicking on save points in the form of a diary atop a pedestal (which I finished today). I'll email him after this XD.

My mark: 8/10 as well (like I said, I can't compare this as it's the first Design Document I have ever seen (I did though see a Doom Design Document, but I never read it XD))

Story:

8/10... not bad I have to say. Personally I like the story in terms of its theme, i.e. Steampunk. I didn't like how it was set in London though. But this is just me, I just don't like Adventure or RPG games that links to our world as I play games to escape reality. As for the events that happen throughout the entire story.... Well... So far there isn't anything I really hate. The only thing that stirred me the wrong way was probably the Asylum and how Alex and Eva gets caught and is sent to the Asylum. According to the story, after successfully getting a piece, Alex and Eva celebrates in the pub and they accidentally spill out information about themselves and their purpose.

When I first heard that, the first thing that came into my mind was "why would two people, who do not belong in the world, go to a pub and celebrate?" I mean there isn't anything wrong with that, but wouldn't they want to keep a low profile, I mean they're not from that world and are not planning to stay there permanently. Plus, isn't Alex like 17 years old? I would like it better if they were followed all the way home and then after leaving the house to get more of the pieces, they are attacked by the Secret Society or something. *shrugs*.

Oh and the Asylum? Well I'm never a fan of places like those. So I automatically disliked it. But in terms of the story, I guess it sorta makes sense. But I thought we could go without the use of the Asylum. My contribution to the story? Well I'm one of the 4 writers XD, what more can I say.

My mark: 6.5/10

Logics:

Ah the Logics, I was really surprised when he gave a 7/10 for this. Since Joseph and I knew that the puzzles weren't like Myst or Riven. Jason said that it could be improved if we made it like Riven, where there are some dead ends, or where some puzzles connect to later ones. Joseph and I talked about this, but we were having difficulty with this. I think it's because we both had all these different ideas. I think if only one of us were doing it, that person would probably be able to do connections and such. Though the work load would probably kill him XD. I thought the puzzle I did for the Art Gallery was good, but Jason said it was OK lol. Well he has more experience in gaming so I have to take his word for it... or his comment XD.

I wonder if I can use the "Newbie Card" on this? XD XD XD.

I still haven't read ANY of Joseph's puzzles. He has made a logic tree, but not a document where it explains his puzzles. Because Im in charge of the items for the games and if Joseph dumps all these items on my lap near the last day, well frankly my dear, I would be a little annoyed.

My mark: ...5/10 probably because like Jason said, it could use more "connections" in terms of the puzzles.

Well that's my two cents!

Looking back at what we've done, we could do A LOT better. I also thought we could be more organized. Like...

[Week X]
"Alright, Jason, you're job is to finish Alex by next week. I want a finished drawing of him from head to toe. Also maybe on a different paper, draw various hairstyles and faces so we can do a Mister Potato Head and choose the "famous" ones."

[Next week]
"Alright, Jason has finished Alex, everyone take a look. Alright, let's make a vote! Who votes on this hair..."

And so forth. At the same time, also assign the other artists to do the other characters. Like Carter - Eva, Winchey (seriously, I can never remember her name) - Bartender etc.

But this is just me.

Well, now I have to work on the Interface design within two weeks. Hopefully I can finish this by next week ^^

Time Heals Some Wounds...

Ah thank goodness for Wednesdays!!!

Everyone got to work on their tasks immediately. I continued with the game's logo and it turned out great! I personally love it because it has that smooth and flowing feeling ^^.

Jason's was good as well, I think his is more detailed. I wonder which one will be chosen? Probably Jason's, he IS the best artist in the class (least in my opinion) XD.

The group made a late deicision. We are going back to 2D. 2D backgrounds and cel-shaded characters.

*sigh*

I think half or some of the class members actually voted for this. I was rather annoyed at this. I know for sure that Cody, Carter, Jason and I voted for 2D. But everyone wanted 3D. Cody said in the past that it will be much faster if we done the game in 2D. Because as he explained, why draw something, create it in 3D and then make it 2D in AGS? I totally agree! Well, now the class knows. I mean in the beginning, it is already crazy to make a game in one semester. At least that's what I think. Jason (the tutor) said that it can take even 4 years to make a "decent" game. I think if we started with 2D we could have a lot done. As I was talking to Carter, he said that if it was 2D he and Jason and do a LOT in terms of drawing because they are 1337 (leet) at drawing 2D.

Another thing that annoyed me today is that Jared has now officially taken over both the Art Gallery quest AND the Sewer quest.

...

Seriously... what the hell!? In the beginning I asked/announced to the writers that I will be doing the Art Gallery and Sewer quest. But now, Jared has taken over! I am seriously, SERIOUSLY pissed off. I didn't tell him, because considering our time, I don't want to slow down the game's completion. I asked him today why he changed the Art Gallery quest. He said something about mine not being linear or something.

I read his quest on it and it was so simple! Plus, apparantly the Airship has 4 floors... Jason told us to make puzzles that would crack the player's mind, or hurt their heads. That's what I did. But Jared changed it and made it easy. I don't want to go through his quest, but it seems that his quest is based around timing and patience rather than wits. Only 2 things in his quest required wits (maybe 3) but the rest were like "you have to carefully walk in the shadows and not hit the lights.

-_-"

Well like I said, I didn't make a big deal of it today because I want the game to finish. But still... I just think he shouldn't have done this, even if he was the story lead. I did ask him to help with the quest, but I told him to work on the Money Quests and maybe the 2 "Other Pieces" quests. But since I told him that I will be doing one of that "Other Pieces" quest, that leaves him with one of it AND the Money Quests (Unless he didn't tell me something). But as you know from my previous post, he took it out.

Sorry for the rant, but I thought I'd post what I feel. Anyways, everyone's been doing good and the models are coming in nice. Jared done some more maps and Jesse worked on the Design Document. I had to help him with it because I think he was getting sick of it XD

Other than that, it was a great day! Though I really hate it how Gaming Class is only this year, and only HALF a year. I kinda wish there was more to this next year =(. I'm enjoying it SO MUCH! Best. Class. Ever!

I also found out that those who take Gaming Class this year can take Animation next year without doing Animation this year! Man, I should have chosen Visual/Special Effects this yar. Hope I can change it.

Anywho's see you next week! Same Game blog! Same Game time!

Light and Shadow

Ah, good to be back! 3 weeks was a long wait XD

Cody, James, Eugene and Lincoln have shown us their results for the characters that they are modelling and they look great! Eugene already modelled the clothes and hair on the professor XD. Man that guy is fast. The others are showing progress too and if they continue this rate (or Eugene's rate =p) we should be able to finish all the characters in two weeks.

A couple of people have new drawings in terms of the places and vehicles. Some started to draw the maps and such and Jason and I got working on the game's logo. I thought of animating the title, like in Kingdom Hearts. Because when I first saw that in the game, I was like "Holy crap that's AWESOME!!!". So yeah, I started working on the title and I quite like the result. But I think it's too simple and "clean" because I done it in flash (what can I say, I suck drawing on paper rofl).

Other than that, yeah everyone started working again and I had a small meeting with the writers.

This part was a little annoying. Because during the meeting, I brought up about having "Money Quests" in the game and whether we should still have it. Jarred then said that we are going to take it out and instead have the main character do some errand for the tailor shopkeeper and in return, be awarded with the required clothing.

...

That's what I suggested in the very beginning before the story was finalized! Jarred doesn't seem to remember, but the thing is, during that time, I explained to the group why putting a money system in the game is rather irrelevant and a waste of time since you only need it in the beginning where you have to buy different clothes. So I suggested that we should just get the character to do an errand for the shopkeeper and, as a reward, be given the clothes. But in the end, they agreed with putting in money quests so I just played a long.

I laughed at it though, saying that nobody ever listens to me. Cody even went along with the joke and said "well done Jarred, you're a genius!" ROFL. But Cody remembered me suggesting that idea though so it's OK.

But yeah, I was a little annoyed at that though. But what's worse, is that this isn't the first time it happened! It actually happened before in the past and with the same person, Jarred XD lol.

But I didn't say anything about how I felt during the time though hehehehe. But I am now, because... well... this is a blog after all.

Anyways, yeah I think everyone has started working harder now and I think we should be able to finish this game in time. But I'm still worried.

A Light Emerges from the Darkness

Man I should have given my posts better titles XD

The title for this one may be a bit too exegerated though hehehehe. Today we had a small meeting and we finally got a lot done. Before we usually didn't do anything GREAT besides knowing the story and talking about our performance and the game. But today, we finally chosen a final for most of our characters.

Now Dino or Jesse should scan and send the characters to the animators for them to model in the weekend or so.

We also got to see some sketches of the professor's lab and the temple of technology courtesy of Chi and Curtis ^^ Sweet

Let's hope we can do even more next week in our "4" hour class

Meetings 3

Probably our last meeting during the break. This time, less people came and we only talked for a little while XD

But it's understandable, Jesse sent the email too late like he already mentioned. But I got some stuff confirmed and now I'm working on drawing the items and finishing them off on Illustrator.

LMAO, today Dino forgot I was in the Art team, which explains why I never got an email from him :p

Well, hopefully I can do lot in the weekends, I've been busy working on my novel (not class-related).

Good job guys! (Especially Jason and Carter, lmao those guys should just be the entire art team XD)

Meetings 2

Well, I had a couple of more meetings that happened in the past week or so.

The first was again with the writers. We met at the Auckland University Information Commons. I brought my laptop then so we could view the story and such. We discussed more about the in-depth parts of the quests and also looked at some of the dialogues and quests that were done.

It went quite well I have to say, we got a lot of things settled and fixed.

The second meeting was a few days ago at our classroom in AUT. I thought we were going to go hard into discussing the story, and then placing some work for the art team.

But I was so disappointed.

All we did was read the story, ate pizza and looked at a few drawings. Nothing else aside Jesse saying that he hopes to get everyone into 3D that day... which didn't work.

Honestly, I felt I should have stayed home and just worked on quests. But because I'm a part of the team, I had to come. But I just hope next time we have a better meeting. I felt like I wasted my time there.

Other than that, all I been doing are quests, quets and more quests... that and creating some of the maps where they take place like the Art Gallery and Sewers.

6th Class

In today's exciting class of Game Development and Interaction, we first had a discussion in the beginning where Jesse and the Group Leaders reported on what they and their group did during the week. We also talked about what should be done and what we could improve at.

Jason talked with the people who were going to put the game together about AGS and its capabilities. After that, he showed the class. But we only had to know the surface, the people who puts the game together had to know it more deeply.

I was surprised when I saw Jason's example in the AGS. I thought it would be very pixelated and... well crap looking XD.

But it's good that it was more than I expected, though making a game in it sounds kinda hard, especially when scripting is involved.

We also got the art team (including me) to showcase our work to the class. Dino placed our work in the Design Document and later on sorted most of us on what kind of things we will be drawing for. For example, he assigned Jason to draw the 3 main characters. But due to this, apparantly, Carter didn't like that since he wanted to do the main characters. At least that's what I heard from Dino and Jason.

I thought I could do best in drawing the items since I am qutie good in drawing non-biological things.

I had a talk with the writing team and with Joseph about what we should do in the future. At the end, Joseph and I will meet at Auckland Library to work on puzzles. Hopefully, we will get a LOT done. Because the last meeting we had, regarding the story, I thought we could have done more.

So hopefully, Joseph and I can really get into creating the puzzles and have everythin finished by the end of Friday. Or at least everything up to the first quest done. Apparantly, Joseph is like me, we both work our best during our own time in our own leisure. But I guess that's probably true for everyone else lol.

I just really hope we can do a lot on Friday.

The other major thing that happened today is that we have a name for our company and our game!!! Huzzah!!! Our company's name is uh... Irridescent or something Studios. I like the word Studio in the name, but can't rememeber what the first one was called or even spelled XD. Our game name is Pulse of Pistons. I quite like Steam Shift better because it is easier to say. But hey, Jesse asked everyone and I think Pulse of Pistons got the most vote.

I think we done well today and hopefully have done A HUGE AMOUNT OF WORK on the game over the holidays. Because two weeks is enough to get a LOT done........ yeah.......

I hope Jason designs our company's logo. Heck he should be the one to draw everything ROFL. Nah that will probably kill him hehehehehe.

Well that's it for me! Until next time gamers!

Meetings

On Friday we had a small meeting about what's happening and stuff. Wasn't much stuff to talk about but near the end, Jesse, Joseph, Jarred and I had a conversation about the story. Yeah Cody was suppose to be there, but he had to go somewhere first. He came back near the end for a couple of minutes but left again. He told his reason to Jesse so it's all good.

Anyways... the story... we had a good debate about issues regarding how realistic the game should be. I suggested that it shouldn't reach the point where parts on machines actually make sense. Like we don't want people to go "how is that thing able to fly!? It's massive with a small ballon!" or something like that, you know...

I mean there's nothing wrong with that, but I feel that since that is a game, it should be 100% realistic.

Anywhos... this is where the 4 writers (including me of course) met up on Sunday at Joseph's spot. At first, the discussion was going great. But as time passes, I began to dislike how we kept sidetracking too far and how it took AGES to finish some of the quests. I'm not saying that sidetracking is a bad thing or that it takes AGES to do quests. Because a lot of thinking goes into this. But I, as a writer, take my passion seriously. Which is why you will almost NEVER hear any humour in my writings unless I actually wanted a character to be the "funny" one. But so far, that hasn't happen. (Yeah call me lame but that's just how I am)

At the end, with the ideas/story we got so far, there was some that I didn't like to be honest. I'm not gonna say which parts though. But this isn't going to stop me from helping the group finish the game, because I love games and will put all my effort (or most XD) into creating the game.

Once Jarred has finalised the story, Joseph and I will start working on the puzzles. Hopefully that will go smooth and I do hope that the puzzles will be challenging ^^.

Well, now all I have to do is the puzzles and the drawing thing so the Art team can see who's style is the best.

Today, around 15 minutes past 10, we watched the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Not sure if everyone was there, let alont arrive on time, but no one is perfect I guess.

I got some drawing in today but dammit... the ideas in my head never come out right on paper!

Must... practise... drawing!!!

Ah well, until next time!

5th Class

Ah, yet another Gaming Class has finished today and this time it was a little bit more serious.

We started appointing the REAL teams. One by one we stood up and said what our number 1 choice was and what we hated to be in. I chose Writer as my number 1 choice of course ^^. We mostly sorted out teams, what we had to do as a team, how things will work and so forth. All the information we needed on what it means to work as a team.

At the near end, I only ended up doing writing. I thought that this was pretty "cheap" for me, having only one task and thought I would do another one so I can pull a little more of my weight around (if that even makes sense). Anywhos, I decided to join the Art team. Why you ask? Well I may not be an artist, but I believe I am capable of designing wicked characters, buildings and the such. I'm writer, so it should be natural for me to be able to design things like this ^^.

That was mostly it. Oh Joseph and I tried out a text based game called The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy game. Boy, it was hard and annoying because for starters, you sort of have to be careful of the words you type into the game and second, it was a game where you sort of required some knowledge of either the book or movie. But that's what I think XD

I think this is going to be great. I'm so excited at a couple of things. 1) I'm in the story team; 2) I'm in the art team, designing characters and such; 3) We need a name for the game (For all those who are not familiar with me (and that's a LOT) I love to make up names on the spot)); 4) I'm doing my part in creating what will be an AWESOME GAME!!!!

Also, I saw on one of the computers, above what was going to be the Game Name, a company name. Hehehe, that will be so cool if we get to name our "company". Make it sound professional and stuff ^^

Well, my task so far is to try designing three of the many characters in the game so Dino and his team can decide who's style we should stick with. Another one of my task is too meet up with the other 3 writers on Sunday to "clean up" the story and create the logic puzzles along the way.

Man, this class was WAY more than I expected! I thought it was going to be awesome, you know, working on a game. But now, it's just jaw-dropping, show-stopping, heart-pumpingly AWESOME!!!

So... excited... o.O

LMAO, I should cut down on how many times I talk about how I love this course.

Also, another contributor to how cool the class is, is the tutor Jason. No, I'm not sucking up or kissing ass... it's true. Unlike other tutors I have been with, Jason is the one who REALLY knows what he is talking about since he has been playing games for (according to him) around 30 years. So every single thing that he says is accurate and true. I'm quite impressed at his knowledge about the field as well.

Hehehehe, well until next time!

4th Class

In today's class, I, along with Cody and Joseph, got to read some of our writing to the class. Cody was first, who read a narrative poem and read from a film script he did. Well actually three classmen went and acted out a scene. I found both his writing good, especially his poem ^^. I was next and I decided to read from an old novel I had written years ago. I think it was my first one. Nonetheless, I think the class enjoyed it. Though I didn't put any "umph" into my reading, I think I did quite good lol. Last was Joseph, who read a very detailed, metaphorical passage. I was actually surprised at his writing o.O.

We soon done a "around-the-world" story telling starting with Ellie. I'll spare you the details, but the stories that came out from each of us were quite funny because obviously we all had different ideas.

After that, we started working on our story. Like before I'll spare you the details, but it took a long time to finally agree on one story lol. We had ideas thrown everywhere and at one point argued about how many fathers there were in the story rofl!

The final story so far ended up quite good. Personally I didn't quite like the story. Why you ask? Well... I'm someone who loves medieval stuff. Swords, magic, elders, villages etc. You know, like almost all Role Playing Games. Even if the game is futuristic like Star Ocean, they still had swords and magic, which is good enough. They also had peaceful villages and stuff. But I go with the majority and the majority agreed with the current story. It's probably not 100% solid but it's still something ^^. Anyway, I can probably try to add elements of fantasy to it... I think lol.

Anyway, Joseph and I were assigned to focus more on the logic part of the game. I quite like that ^^ since I like to do puzzles as it challenges the mind hehehehe.

At the end, Jason helped us on what we should research and guess what mine is? I should play more point-and-click games and study the type of puzzles presented to us! lmao! Awesome! Well that and I think also about the other things that's gonna be in the game like English Victorian stuff (the ones related to... ... ... something punk... ... ... dammit, I forgot what it's called lmao), clothing, dialogues etc. Anything related to London because apparantly we start in London -_-"... That doesn't really bother me, but the fact that the parallel dimension is so related to Earth bothers me... ah well *shrugs*. I can adapt hehehe.

I hope this game goes well and becomes a great hit! XD

3rd Class

Ah the 3rd week... and this class just gets better and better. Today we got to see and play Defender, a VERY old game. I thought I probably won't like it, but after playing it... lol... it was a little addicting. I can see why Jaso said that "it was the world of warcraft of that time" XD.

We talked more about games as usual but mostly brainstormed on our game. The genre, theme, the feeling we want the players to have etc. It was a pretty good brainstorm, I quite like the idea so far, of a person who gets teleported to another paralell dimension and his quest is to get back home. It's not original, but hey, it's very hard (or near impossible) to be original these days =(

Sadly as before, almost the same people were the ones talking during the brainstorm =S. Those who didn't I'm a little worried. I mean I used to be all quiet as well when I was younger, but like Jason said, if you don't say anything, you're ideas won't be written down or be noticed. Plus they could end up working on a game they didn't like.

Also, this is probably just me, but during brainstorms, a couple of people tend to talk to eachother about ideas instead of saying it to the class. It's not always the same people of course, but this usually happens.

Other than that, can't wait for next week! I, along with Joseph and Cody, nominated ourselves to be writers... for now... and we have to bring samples of our work next week. I'm excited because as a writer, I want to get feedback on my work to see if I'm doing well ^^. I just hope I don't get such a bad comment that it ends up me feeling like not continuing my writing XD. But hey, guess I have to prepare myself for some bad critics. Not every novel gets a good review ^^.

Man, I really want Wednesday to come soon, it's like the most fun class I have ever had in my life!... *thinks back to other classes*... ... ... yeah, my Game class is the most fun ^^ lol.

I wonder if 12 weeks is enough to make a 'decent' game...

2nd Class

Just had another class of Interactive Design and Game Development and it was as fun as last weeks ^^. We first started playing chess with the LOTR theme. I challenged Cody but at the end he beat me, ah well, I'm not surprised since I was under pressure, we couldn't take our time to think. Which makes sense since it was during class time hehehehe.

We talked more about games and Jason told us new things like how things can relate back to fear. The different motivations and things like Risk&Reward or Fight or Fly. I think I have learnt more in Jason's class than the other classes I have had during this course. Maybe it's because I'm listening more since it's about games XD.

We also played Texas Hold'em. I was excited to play since I enjoy watching the world series championships on SKY. But when Jason said that the chips are our marks, I backed out. The game was so fun and interesting when people started betting big. At the end, Jesse and Jarred ended up with nothing whilse Dino had some and Cody and Ellie having the most. Ellie though came out victorious hehehehe. The thing that I got annoyed at was the fact that at the end Jason said that it wasn't for keeps ><. If I had known I would have stayed. But then again, if there wasn't a risk, the game wouldn't be as fun heheheeh.

Near the end, we had a taste of the 3 briefs we got and we began discussing about the game we were going to make in the future. I'm really excited about this, even though I know that there will be times where I will screw up and become stressed due to deadlines. But hey, it's making a game! My passion is much stronger than anything else =D. I do hope that everyone joins in when we do discussions. Because like, Eugene, Jason, Carter and a couple of others are usually in the back and not saying anything. I used to be like that I have to admit, but like Jason said, if I don't say anything, my ideas won't get through and I may end up making something I will hate =(.

But I think we will all do well on this project. Personally I hope they do a medieval/fantasy quest type of game. But that's just me, I usually go with the majority of the people. So far, 4 hours of this class is really worth it.

Though we are currently going on a bumpy road, once we all really get into it, I think our road will be a lot smoother.

I'm feeling rather nervous about 2 of the briefs, but it's probably because I don't understand it lol.

Come on week5... get over here now!

1st Class

I just had my first class of Interactive Design and Game Development with Jason Brown. I was expecting a sort of slow day since most first days will be about the brief and a brief explanation about the class and its projects. But apparantly I was wrong =P

We started with a group discussion about types of games, the first games, what games can teach us etc. From one discussion, we had multiple ones, I learnt a lot and noticed a lot of things about games that I never even thought of before! This coming from a person who has played games most of his life XD.

We then played Rock, Paper, Scissors with one another, like a small championship. At the end I was the champion... but was soon overthrown by Lincon lol. Shortest. Victory. Ever. We then discussed about the game and what it was about.

We also went out to play some bullrush ^^. For those who don't know the game, a row of players stand on one side of the field while 1 person stands between the players and the other side, a.k.a the finish line. The lone person can pick a player to try and pass him and get to the other side or declare 'bullrush' where everyone runs. You win by being the last 'survivor' and you lose if you got tagged and end up in the middle. Though unlike most other games, when you get tagged, you don't go out of the game, you just have to be one of the people who tags the runners. After finding an 'acceptable' place, we began playing. It wasn't long and I'm not sure everyone actually tried XD lol. Almost everyone got caught by the second round/bullrush. But miraculously, Cody was able to get by almost 8 ish people lol.

After finishing the game after 2 rounds, we sat down and Jason asked for people who were good at writing. Four people stood up, including me, and we ended up having to make up a story one by one. Starting with Cody. Whenever we felt lost, or wasn't able to continue, we handed to the next person. The story we ended up with was a little twisted and dodgy -_-" lol. Back at the class, we got some more teams, animators, coders etc. We went through the story as though we were going to create it. Animators acted out the characters and, back and forth with the writers , we started to 'smoothen' out the characters. Most of us were a little bit 'shaky' since it was our first time, but we got through ^^.

We got another small break and then went to class where we started a new story. This time the wroters were James and Jarred. We ended up with a Tuatara having to save his family. I think we decided to reject the idea of putting in Maori influence into the game. Can't remember why though. We done the same as with the first story, where people got into groups and such. But I think just like before, most of us were still a bit shaky. But it was alright, we done quite well.

After that, we went out to play hopskotch ^^. Hopskotch, if you don't know, is where there are squares on the ground and the squares form a vertical 'path' made up of single, double or triple squares. The person who's turn it is, comes up and throws a stone towards the path. When the stone lands on a square, the player must jump from square to square but has to avoid the one that the stone landed on. You win by getting to the other side. You lose if your stone or feet ends up outside a square, and you lose if you step on a square more than once. Also, I came out winner ^^. I think I had a good advantage since I was tall. Because Jason cranked up the rules a bit. Like the last round, where it was just me and Lincon, we couldn't jump the third row of three squares nor the 4th single square. So we had to do a good jump.

After that fun game (Boy, first time playing hopskotch and it was quite fun, and funny ^^ lol) we went back to class to do a small 'wrap up' and then class was over.

At the end, I really liked the class. It was relaxing, fun and educational ^^. I really can't wait until we get started on the game that we plan to make. I hope I become the story designer (or whatever those people are called) though I do hope I don't get too detailed with it since I tend to overdo it with stories XD. Also, even though I "do" want to be the story designer, or part of the story team, I'm not sure my style of story telling will appeal to everyone else since I can't really do a 'good' humurous story. *shrugs* ah well, only time will tell I suppose ^^.
